Floating on a Plastic Sea
This weekend was quite a success! Jesse and I literally spent the entire weekend working on music (from 8pm on Friday to almost 8pm on Sunday, with about 14 of those hours used for sleeping). Here's a recap of what we did...

Day 1: After grabbing a bite to eat at Hardees in Moberly, Jesse and I arrived at his place sometime between 8 and 9 pm. We dove head first into making pieces for a song idea I had called "Circus" (that's the code name, as it doesn't have a name yet). Jesse laid down electric guitar and bass pieces; and I laid down a keyboard drum track, worked on lyrics, and sang some faux lyrics to see how it would sound. The resulting song is actually going to be a pretty good song once we get it finished. We thought out the general outline of the song, and worked on several pieces that could serve as a bridge. We went to bed at 2:30.

Day 2: I woke up at 10:30 and stumbled into the recording studio after having amazing pancakes for breakfast (kudos to Jesse's mum). We worked until 6:30 or so on a Burt Mcgee song codenamed "Candy-Slap". Jesse and I came up with pieces for the song, and I laid down tracls with keyboard piano and strings. We then moved on to the song "Terrible Light". This one went quickly because it was the most put-together song on the "Dark Forest" album. Jesse recorded the acoustic guitar chords and a guitar lead piece. The result was fantastic! It's Probably my favorite song recorded this weekend; so beautiful and peaceful. We then went our separate ways for a little while. Jesse worked on mixing "Candy-Slap" while I worked on putting "The End" together. We recorded laugh tracks and piano for "Candy-Slap", and Jesse mixed in a particularly hilarious sped-up Burt McGee laugh, along with a backwards circus-y piano piece. We ended the night by experimenting with the vocal song "The End". It sort of failed, but it showed me how I wanted to record the song when I come to it in the future. I stumbled to bed at 4:30.

Day 3: I woke up at 10:30 and began working on the song "Plastic Sea" (yeah, just like that; I literally woke up, walked into the studio, and began working). I strengthened the lyrics, and worked on getting chord progression solid on the piano. Jesse came back from Columbia, and we spent an hour or so talking about iPhones and life in general. We went to work on "Plastic Sea". I laid down a piano piece, and Jesse laid down an excellent bass piece. We then took turns recording an acoustic guitar piece, and finally Jesse recorded a few weird electric guitar pieces. Of all the of the "Dark Forest" songs that have come to me, this is probably my favorite, and I'm hoping it turns out once it all gets mixed down. We then worked for an hour or so on "Candy-Slap", adding keyboard strings, circus-like piano music, and a sombre keyboard violin piece. After that I had to head home...

So there you have it; my weekend in a rather large nutshell. I'm going to spend sometime this week and next mixing in vocals, and I should have some demos up pretty soon which will sound pretty close to what will be on the album.
